Overview Over the last 20 years Glasgow has transformed itself from a declining, post-industial city, to a confident, outward-looking, economically regenerated metropolis. The arts scene in Glasgow is thriving: filmgoers can enjoy not just modern multiplexes, but also art house movies and classics at the Glasgow Film Theatre. Top pop and rock bands play the city regularly, at the SECC, Barrowlands, Carling Academy, and King Tut’s. Add to that the numerous pubs and clubs offering live music and dance, and you can see why Glasgow was recently voted “UK’s Coolest City” in a poll by The Big Issue magazine. Classical tastes are catered for by the City's Royal Concert Hall. The city also boasts thriving Jazz and Folk scenes.
The city has an abundance of chic restaurants in the Merchant City, and south of the river and was recently proclaimed "Curry Capital of the U.K." for the second year running.
Glasgow is also a retail mecca for the committed shopper. The city is the second largest shopping centre in the entire UK. Buchanan Galleries remains the largest in-centre shopping development in Scotland, supplemented by a further three major shopping centres at Princes Square, St Enoch, and the Buchanan Galleries.
The City also boasts Europe's largest area of green spaces per head of population. There are several large parks within easy reach of the city centre including Glasgow Green, Queen's Park, Kelvingrove Park (home of Kelvingrove museum) and Pollok Park (home to Pollok House and the renowned Burrell Collection).
Finally if you don't want to spend the whole conference in town, the city is within easy reach of the Ayrshire Coast and its golf courses, Loch Lomond, the Scottish Highlands.
